NG:DEV.TEAM's René Hellwig has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund upgraded Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network ports for his R-Type-inspired Sega Dreamcast shoot-'em-up Redux: Dark Matters.

The campaign's main draw is a Kickstarter-exclusive Limited Edition preorder for the Sega Dreamcast version of Redux. Backers who pledge $65 or more will receive a two-disc set featuring Redux: Dark Matters and its predecessor DUX 1.5, both of which are playable on Dreamcast consoles. Only 1,000 copies of the set will ever be produced, and none will be sold after the Kickstarter campaign concludes.

As of this writing, the project has earned $8,000 toward its goal of $25,000, with 28 days left until the funding deadline. Pledge rewards range from downloadable soundtracks ($25) to custom-made arcade sticks ($1,000).

When Sega discontinued production of the Dreamcast console in 2001 and withdrew from the domestic hardware market, it marked the conclusion of one of the most tumultuous and error-strewn periods in the company's 72-year history. Sega Enterprises' spectacular fall from grace during the course of the 1990s remains a tragic spectacle of overconfidence and woefully misguided business practice.

At the start of the decade, Sega stood astride the gaming world like a colossus; it had smashed Nintendo's vice-like stranglehold in the US and conquered Europe with its street-smart marketing. But by the close of the '90s, the company's reputation was in tatters, its user-base had all but collapsed and it was driven dangerously close to the yawning abyss of insolvency.

This is the story of how The House That Sonic Built came crashing down in spectacular fashion.

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaio (Sale)

Title : Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaio (Sale)
Publisher : Treasure
Game Type : Shooter
Console : Dreamcast

Price : £44.99

The SF Kosmo gang have been stealing space fruit and selling it at hyper inflated prices. Full of tongue in cheek humour as you'd expect from this developer and some very funny English translations. Huge title with plenty of levels. Cunning counter attack method involves waiting until your ship is in imminent danger before launching the counter, and the results are the more spectacular depending on the level of danger. A national treasure of a game with a few extras not found in the N64 Bangaioh version.

A FMV Sci Fi adventure in which players head to the seediest depths of the underworld to find out what is going on when they awake with an identity that doesnt fit and worse still is that of a master criminal. If this was a Holywood blockbuster the lead role would definitely be Nicholas Cage, but it ticks all the right boxes and isnt ashamed of what it is.
