Traveling the World with a Skateboard and a Camera

Through DSL Magazine we found out about the beautiful project "The Photographer Series" by Andrew Norton. Norton tells the stories behind some of skateboardings most epic images and the dudes who made them.

This episode features photographer Jonathan Mehring who travels the world with his camera and a skateboard, enabling some pretty unusual encounters with locals and nature alike. To him, “It’s just an expansion of the high school road trip. You got your drivers license and you’re heading out into the unknown."

ZBoard Sam Sheffer lead

I'm something of an electric skateboard veteran. Last year at CES I rode the Board of Awesomeness, an electric skateboard that uses a Kinect and a Windows 8 tablet to function. This year at CES I had the opportunity to ride the ZBoard; an electric skateboard that works like a Segway — leaning forward makes you accelerate, and leaning back slows you down. The ZBoard is yet another Kickstarter success we've seen here at CES 2013, and it blew my mind.

Lil Wayne gets deep and personal talking about Steve Jobs’ death, why he drank syrup, why he tattooed his whole body, why he bought a Bugatti, why he learned how to play a guitar and put out a rock album, and why he learned how to skateboard. Tune also shows us a little bit of his mansion, starts to skateboard on his roof, and tells us about how he was considered a “Chief Blood” in Rikers Island.

This is the story of three adolescents, who made an unlikely discovery on the GDR’s crumbling tarmac: the skateboard. The board from America didn’t just become the fun epicenter of their last summers in East Germany, but also turned into a symbol for their autonomy in a decrepit “Regelstaat” that had lost touch with its citizens. A mix of staged scenes and archive footage allows us an unconventional look into the universe of the late GDR’s youth. The legend of East German skaters is the starting point for this unheard of story about fun, rebellion and the courage to be yourself.

After becoming the first ever skateboard world champion in 1977, aged 19, original Z-Boy Tony Alva shunned other major skate companies and set up his own - Alva Skates. The company was the first to be owned and run by a skateboarder, and by using Canadian maple plywood, they set new standards for deck manufacturing.

Four years ago however, the influential skateboarder hit rock bottom when his lifestyle became all too much. A new short film from Vans, entitled "Pass The Bucket", documents Alva's fight for sobriety after years of drug addiction and alcoholism and follows him on his new life direction. Watch below.
