Scriptwriter, story designer and 'narrative paramedic,' Rhianna Pratchett, is most well-known for being a 14-year veteran of the videogames industry. She went from being a journalist for PC Zone magazine and The Guardian newspaper into games development and has become one of the most respected writers and narrative designers in her field. She has worked for companies such as Sony, Electronic Arts, SEGA, Codemasters and Square Enix, and her titles include: Heavenly Sword, Mirror's Edge, the entire Overlord series and the new Tomb Raider reboot, due for release in March 2013. Her work in videogames has seen her nominated for a BAFTA and nominated three times for the Writers' Guild of Great Britain's 'Best Videogame Script' award, which she won in 2008 for Overlord. Pratchett was named one of the top 100 most influential women in the games industry by EDGE magazine and has also worked in comics, short stories, non-fiction books, film and TV. At TEDx Transmedia 2012, Rhianna talked about the future of the videogames writer. Click here to read GaymerCon Renamed 'GaymerX' in Response to Trademark Dispute [Update] No sooner than did GaymerCon gather enough financial backing to organize its first ever meeting in 2013 did a trademark issue—something that pisses off gamers of any orientation—arise with the name. "Gaymer" has been trademarked by the guy who owns gaymer.org, and he even sent a cease-and-desist letter over to Reddit for its r/gaymer subreddit. That didn't bode well for GaymerCon. More »

Much personal rage was felt last week after the announcement of the makeover in store for Lara Croft, Tomb Raider’s DD-cup heroine. Gone are the comically oversized, anatomically impossible breasts. She now gets to wear an actual outfit comprised of garments one would reasonably wear while engaged in a bloody crime fighting mission: a shirt that covers her midriff and a pair of pants that covers her ass. So far, this is (sadly) exciting progress in the realm of women’s representation in video games. Game makers have apparently moved beyond the “fuckable vixen/hero” trope. Great. But what terrible trope have they replaced her with?

I once happened upon my brothers attempting to fly an SUV off a cliff. This was years ago, when Grand Theft Auto III was still new, but it was already easy enough to search online for the cheat code to make cars fly. After about an hour of trying to glide across a river and into a football stadium, they finally cleared the edge of the wall, landed the car inside, and broke into proud ...

Hamilton's Great Adventure developer Fatshark announced that its tactical action-RPG Krater will premiere for Windows platforms via Steam on June 12th, with a Mac release to follow in July.

Built on a foundation of "crafting, exploration and consequence," Fatshark promises a cooperative, survival-based experience in which players can level up their characters, but risk permanent injuries and death during dangerous encounters. Follow-up episodes will be released as downloadable content starting later this year.

Fatshark plans to release a preorder-exclusive beta version of Krater shortly before the game's launch in June.

IGF 2012 Excellence in Audio winner and visual stunner Botanicula received a release date today from developer Amanita Design. Botanicula will be released on April 19th for Windows, Mac, and Linux at the official website.

Jakub Dvorsky tells IndieGames that it will also be sold on Steam, Mac App Store, GOG and many more sites. However, only those who order through the main website get the MP3 soundtrack, too.

Some of the key features in this adventure include more than 150 detailed locations to explore, five main characters with various skills and personalities, and "no text or lengthy dialogs to bore you," as the developer put it. Botanicula is set to music and sound effects by Czech band DVA.

Amanita Design promises bonuses for vigilant players at the end of the game, so be prepared to point and click your way to find and do everything. Those curious in how Botanicula differs from Machinarium and other adventure titles should check out this in-depth interview conducted in last month. I personally can't wait for the iPad port, too!

The shadow of the Game universe is heavily inspired by David Lynch’s work, German expressionism, imperialism, hippies from the 70’s, game development culture and modern MMO titles. Damn what a combination!
