Oddball arcade machine goes portable.

Quirky arcade effort Brick People is coming to iOS, Sega has announced.

The original arcade machine, released back in 2009, tasked you with stacking real blocks in front of a screen to help the game's titular creatures reach food dotted around a stage. See the YouTube clip below for a closer look.

The iOS version, due out in the Autumn on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, replicates the concept, adding in touch screen controls, wi-fi multiplayer and Game Center support.

Swift's first for Dark Void studio incoming.

Square Enix will release the latest game from former Valve designer and Portal co-creator Kim Swift, with an official unveiling due this weekend.

The game, which Square's tease dubs "incredibly fascinating and quirky", is being developed at Dark Void developer Airtight Games, where Swift is now a project lead. We'll find out more about the title this Saturday at the PAX Prime show in Seattle.

Swift joined Valve straight out of Washington tech college DigiPen in 2005, where she co-developed Narbacular Drop - the direct inspiration for Portal's basic mechanics. As well as Portal, she also worked on Left 4 Dead 2 before leaving for Airtight back in December 2009.

Reflections' virtual city and fixing bugs.

UK studio Reflections has explained its decision to make the single-player portion of Driver: San Francisco run at 60 frames per second – and revealed the challenges doing so presented the development team.

Art director Mike Haynes told an audience at GDC Europe 2011, attended by Eurogamer today, that dropping to 30FPS would have allowed the team to double its budget for adding detail to the game world – but insisted 60FPS has its benefits.

"A question we get is, is it worth it? Can you even tell? From a gameplay standpoint, and within the engine itself, we did have a toggle that would allow you to switch to 30. And it was very noticeable the difference from playing the game. The game plays very fast-paced, with a lot of action and moving around. Navigation is crucial. It was very obvious.

"It's easier said than done."

Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono has explained why Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are unlikely bedfellows.

"I actually get a lot of requests for Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat on my Twitter feed and elsewhere," Ono told the US PlayStation blog.

"I understand why people want it, but it's easier said than done. Having Chun Li getting her spine ripped out, or Ryu's head bouncing off the floor... it doesn't necessarily match."

Near, Party, LiveArea and Activity.

Sony has revealed more information on PlayStation Vita's online modes Near, Party, LiveArea and Activity.

Near is like the Nintendo 3DS' SpotPass. It's "a location-based gifting system", according to Sony Europe manager of R&D, Phil Rogers.

"What Near does is it allows users to discover each other, leave gifts for each other and essentially find out more about games. You can see where people are in relation to your location, their five most recently played games and also gifts that they've registered. This is fairly cool because it exposes users to games they might not have heard of and you can see how popular those games are and how people are rating them," explained Rogers at the Develop Conference 2011.

And execs don't know what they're doing.

If Japanese developers want to better compete with Western studios they need to hone their social skills, according to former Team Ninja boss Tomonobu Itagaki.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Itagaki argued that many Japanese creators lack a sense of humour, making it more difficult for them to operate on a global stage and successfully promote their work.

"It's important to have the skill to express what you're doing, what you want to do - you know, express yourself. I'm talking about social skills," he explained.
