So far this year's Google I/O has been very developer-centric—perhaps not surprising given that I/O is, at the end of the day, a developer's conference. Especially compared to last year's skydiving, Glass-revealing, Nexus-introducing keynote, yesterday's three-and-a-half-hour keynote presentation focused overwhelmingly on back-end technologies rather than concrete products aimed at consumers.

There's still plenty to see. All this year we've been taking photos to show you just what it's like to cover these shows—we've shown you things as large as CES and as small as Nvidia's GPU Technology Conference. Our pictures from the first day of Google I/O should give you some idea of what it's like to attend a developer conference for one of tech's most influential companies.

You are here

I/O is held in the west hall of the Moscone Center, and between the giant Google signs and this real-life Google Maps pin you'd be hard-pressed to miss it.

"Marga and Mike is such a crazy duo!" photographer Emman Montalvan tells us. Inspired by their friendship and unstoppable attitude the LA based artists brought the two models up on the roof top of his building to hang out and shoot until they ran out of polaroid film and battery. "It was perfect because they are best friends. I wanted the shoot to be really laid back with no fuss," he continues, before explaining that it was a true please to work with both of them.

Norwegian model turned photographer Simen Platou has always been enthusiastic about photography, but it was after working as a model in the fashion industry in Asia that he became increasingly interested in the field. "- And by taking a leap of faith, I skipped my Master studies in Finance and decided to go 100% for photography (sorry, mom and dad)," he says. "There's a whole new wave of photographers entering this world via instant gratification online, and the potential to reach a worldwide audience has been a massive motivation for me to go for photography."

Almost every time we work closely with one of our extremely talented photographers we find it intensely hard to wait with pulling the wraps off the end result. But, as we are proud of all of the work we produce and publish, there are some projects that make it up on our office wall of fame immediately. Whether it's the end result, the process, or just how the photos make us feel. New York based photographer Kate Edwards' debut story for Ben Trovato is one of them.

About two weeks ago we published Berlin based fashion photographer Lukasz Wolejko-Wolejszo's first story for Ben Trovato. Today we're unveiling Lukasz' second story for us, and this time the story is put to Hamburg and its famous red light district Reeperbahn. "We just want to do some colorful funny story of a girl around this hood. She is the girl to watch," Lukasz tells us, adding "She's a new eye-catcher with more importance than the lights, sex shops and dollhouses around her."

Sure, you could debate legislative achievements and spheres of influence to determine who history's greatest leader was. But you could also imagine an old-school video game where Teddy Roosevelt and Josef Stalin—looking a lot like Nintendo's Mario—face off riding weaponized extinct giant lizards. Artist Jude Buffum has done the latter and we are all richer for it. More »

This Might Be the Most Epic Video Game Patent Application Ever

Patent applications let people dream big. Someone out there's got a killer idea for the Litter Box of the Future or fart-proof underwear. There may be hundreds of hurdles to cross before any such thing gets made, but a patent lets them plant a flag in the land of unclaimed ideaspace. More »

The Dead Sea's salinity of 33.7 percent makes it 8.6 times saltier than the ocean. Bordering Israel, the West Bank and Jordan, it is 423m below sea level, making it the lowest place on land on Earth. A tourist hotspot for millennia, more than 1m visitors a year visit on the Israeli & Palestinian side alone. The view from the shore is one thing, but from the air, the sheer strangeness of the salt formations in and around the lake become readily apparent. Photos by Baz Ratner, of Reuters, and others.
